Day 126 - Life in the Cotswolds: It's a living!

I'm waiting for Phil to arrive back from Florida via Toronto. His plane is due to leave tonight [editor's note: it would leave almost 28 hours after it was expected to.] So, today I finished off some work, went for a walk and did a bit of grocery shopping to get things in for a roast lunch.

My ramblings around town got me thinking about how most people who live in the Cotswolds make their living. My research tells me that, as one might expect of such a beautiful area, a lot of people are involved in the tourist trade to some degree. About 35% work in the distribution, restaurant and hotels sector.

Another interesting statistic about the Cotwolds is that more than 36% of the jobs in the district are in 'micro businesses' (those with 10 employees or less). This is the highest in the county  -- almost 15%
above the national rate.

Of course, 86% of the land is deemed agricultural, so a large number of people are employed in farming. The largest crops are oilseed rape (which is planted to start growing over the winter...we've walked next to a lot of these fields).

These statistics most certainly reflect on the friendliness of the people here and the efforts they go to in their support of buying local.
