For today's blog post, I thought I'd share 10 interesting facts about England (or the UK in general) that I've discovered over the years or researched, and that you may not know:
- You can drink drink beer, wine or cider in a pub at age 16. However, you have to have it with a meal, and it has to be purchase by an adult who is accompanying you (and who's probably drinking too ... and driving).
- At home, it is legal for anyone over 5 years old to drink alcohol (but at least they're not driving).
- You are never more than 70 miles from the sea. The town that holds that honour is a place called Coton-in-the-Elms, and although only 70 miles, it would take you about 2 hours and 40 minutes to get from there to the nearest coastal town ... without any traffic issues).
- Were you nervous when you started high school in Canada? Well, in England you start when you are 11...imagine how it feels to stare up at those older students!
- Each day, 165 million cups of tea are consumed in the UK (which has a population of about 66 million people). Why? Because tea cures everything.
- In 2015, there were 50,800 pubs in the UK. But you better drink in one soon...there were 67,800 in 1982 and the number continues to fall every year.
- More than 22 million sheep call England home. Compare that to a little over 800,000 across ALL of Canada.
- So, do you think maybe we have more cattle? Canada had about 5.5 million head of cattle in 2016. England had about twice that number.
- England is slightly smaller in area than Southern Ontario (130,279 km² vs 136,907 km²).
- There are over 225,000 kms of public footpaths in England. To give you an idea how much that is, the Trans Canada Trail (aka The Great Trail), which passes through 13 provinces and territories, has 24,000 kms of trails.
