In the UK, Christmas adverts (as ads are called here) are akin to Super Bowl ads. Major retailers release their seasonal ads with huge pomp and circumstance. The latest ads are discussed and covered to great depth by the media. They are voted on across the media spectrum to determine which is the best. One company spent a million pounds on the development of its Christmas ad, and another 6 million pounds promoting it.
UK Christmas adverts tend to tell a story, and they are generally more like movie trailers running at over 2 minutes in some cases. Of course, they are all designed ultimately to make you buy something, but they can still be quite clever, touching or funny.
If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing a UK Christmas ad, take a look at some that have been released so far this year, and then let me know which one is your favourite.
- John Lewis (department store chain): #MozTheMonster
- Debenhams (department store chain): Cinderella (watch and listen for Ewan MacGregor)
- Boots (drug store chain): Sister Act
- Marks and Spencer: Paddington and the Christmas Visitor
- Asda (what WalMart is called in the UK: advert
- Argos (a catalogue store): #ReadyforTakeOff
- Tesco (grocery store): advert (this one, as you'll see, caused a wee bit of controversy in a country that still very much wishes you a Merry (or Happy) Christmas!
- Vodafone (mobile phone company): A Christmas Love Story (watch for Martin Freeman of Sherlock...and many other films).
- Aldi's (discount store): An Amazing Christmas Adventure (this one is sure to make you "pea" yourself.
